BPOC and EMR - staged or simultaneous?

Sentara Healthcare has used the TDS7000 EMR for over 20 years, but will be converting to the Epic Systems platform at our hopsitals beginning January 2008. Each hospital will have TDS replaced in all care areas at the same time (big-bang approach). Hospitals will be staged over 2-3 years.

We have no previous experience with BPOC using barcodes (documentation has been via a Pyxis charting interface to TDS), but it has been included in the project.

There is some anxiety that attempting EMR and BPOC at the same time is just too much change to manage. The counterpoint is that this is the perfect time for transformational change.

What is your experience/advice about simultaneous vs stage implementations? Oh, and before you answer, CPOE is also part of the project and it will be staged about 3 months after EMR.
