Health Industry Bar Code (HIBC) standard

Hello,

Question for the group concerning the HIBC standard for patient barcode. I have read that the standard suggests a patient barcode be ACxxxxxxxxxxC. The HIBC format uses two characters then the information then a check character. The user barcode would be IExxxxxxxC. This would allow a employee not to be miss-IDed as a user when they are admitted as a patient. Am I on on the right track here? Are others using this standard? Are there other parts of the standard I should be aware of? Are the characters and the check characters calculated or will the always be ACxxxxxxxxxxxC for patient # and IExxxxxxxxxxC for user id?

Thanks
David Gardner RPh
