Cindi Lockhart RE: BMV at children's hospitals/peds?
We are not a children's hospital, however, we had the same questions for any liquids or multi dosing units when setting these up in the PHA dictionaries in preparation for BMV. We toyed with this idea as well, but when we spoke with Meditech about it, they recommended that we NOT do this. This was their response: ""After further discussion with folks at MEDITECH, it was found that doing so would not be beneficial. Essentially this direction would exchange one message for another message which is not the intended result. Building these additional entries would actually subvert the dose checking that occurs now.""
We are a little concerned about the messaging that does occur, and how it does not really verify that the correct dose has been scanned, only that the dose scanned does not match the Order Size in PHA. We have ultimately decided that the best way to verify the dose is to set the Order Size in PHA to 0 on these types of medications, which will prompt the nurse to adjust dose and enter the amount that she is getting ready to administer to the patient.
